The Francis Bacon Baby Grand Piano – First Granite Experiment

The first trial/partial granite bridge was on an old Francis Bacon baby grand. This is the piano that started it all! Every project needs to be tested before you waste/invest a lot of money in a concept just to see if you should proceed or not. We used this piano because we didn’t have a lot of money more in it, and if it wasn’t better sounding than a normal piano the project stops here… or not.

The picture of the bridge in wood, and then in granite shows the 15-note test sample. After installation and stringing we had pianist test this sound just to get an idea what the professionals thought of it. The most notable professional was a pianist with his Doctorate in Piano, and many more credentials… Geoff Tyus. You can’t go far on 15 notes, but he tried it out for us, and after a couple minutes said “I like it”. This blessing of his so to speak had us continue beyond this point, and we had no idea where this would lead, and are amazed beyond belief now seeing many finished prototypes after the original test model.

Some of our tests included a 6’1” Yamaha G3 1991. We put our little 4’9” Francis Bacon baby grand up against this higher-quality Yamaha 6’1” piano, and then on the middle C# we struck both pianos real hard (to level the playing field). Used the same microphone, at the same distance in the same middle of the piano above the C#. Our goal is to accurately sample both pianos and then see which sound we prefer best… the inexpensive starter short piano Francis Bacon, or the Expensive longer and newer piano built by Yamaha.

As you can see from the graph of the signal, and also hear the two sounds of the pianos… I’m sure you will understand how excited we were, and obviously the project was giving the green light to proceed!
